Lorna Wilson – MA – Born 1967
‘Transient Landscapes’
Wilson first studied Fine Art painting at Kingston University in Surrey where she obtained a 1st class BA (Hons) degree. Wilson then went on to study Fine Art at postgraduate level at the Royal Academy Schools in London under the tutorship of Peter Blake, Norman Adams RA, Roderic Bowers RA, Anthony Eyton RA and Jennifer Durrant RA, graduating in 1992.

“The two new Breathe paintings that I completed in 2020 are inspired by the subtle changes in light along with the reflection and shadow of the natural world.”
I am constantly working to capture the ephemerality found in nature.
Working on this scale during the first lock down gave me a sense of freedom that I was craving. Remembrances of walks by the river in my hometown and the sense of calm, reflection and wonder that it always gives me informed these paintings.
They are my quiet place.
All my paintings whether recent or back catalogue celebrate natural landscapes and while boldly recognisable (whether water or land) they rouse a sense of serenity in the viewer.
Inspired by the subtle instances of light, reflection and shadow in the natural world and the transience of landscapes, I strive to replicate these ideas on the canvas. Colour is essential to my work; I am constantly improvising and experimenting with new palettes and tones to capture the shifting light and ephemerality found in nature.
The sense of depth is created by the layers of tonal shades and the fact that I rework and repaint elements of the canvas to channel this idea of momentum and portray the shifts in mood and light.
Wilson was included in a major arts feature in the Sunday Times magazine in 2000, titled, “Altered Images” A full colour feature on a selection of up & coming abstract artists.
Wilson has exhibited extensively both at home and abroad, in cities such as London, Paris, Copenhagen and New York. Wilson continues to exhibit her work both nationally and internationally. Her work is represented in numerous public, private and corporate collections around the world and has been used on the covers of a number of high profile publications.
